Hi Mark,
Thanks for sending me the lecture video. Its advice that I really do need right now.
I think Im ok with most of the steps but the business side of thing has always been my weakness.
Im sure you'll be getting tons of invites to gigs due to this, so I thought I'd give you another one. Im playing in London at Ginglik on Shepherds bush green on the 4th of November. Would you like to come along?
it would be good to meet you.
Thanks again,
Warmest
Fraser

5 Trey says:

10 Duke Machado : Hitmusiclink says:
Mark,
This is why you are the Man! When our new site launches, we could totally use these as tutorials for the bands on our site! Also, starting to gear up for SXSW. Will you be coming again? Remember how we were talking about the European Invasion Night? Let me know how many spots you can fill...will be a Main Outdoor stage with lights and sound...right off 6th Street...and we will be live streaming from the Studio interviews and this time will do a multiple video stream of the Main Stage...Take it easy...Duke

11 Ben Dlugokecki says:
Hi Mark,

You seriously know you're stuff. In the 3 years you've managed us you've expanded our exposure ten fold. You're a remarkable talent, I wish you could manage us - oh, one minute, you do!!

13 Dan Owers says:
Hi Mark great advice we are recording our first e.p in two weeks and we will be using all of your available advice and you will here about us. Thanks for creating this site. It gives us hope.

Dan (The Morphic Fields)

14 Karen says:
Mark,

Thanks for the message link. I like to think we've covered the points you've made to the best of our ability but would be good to have someone who is interested in us further each bit now with an outsiders objective. Easy to get caught up as a band into believing what works and thinking you've nailed it just because you haven't got access to other opinions as yet from someone in the know and with contacts - got A6 flyers! Definately off to look at that Festivals website.
Thanks again, will tune in for more next time!
Karen & TFT

15 James says:

19 Tony Miles says:
Good advice. This is why bands should have a savvy manager and not try to do it all themselves. We musos are a precious lot at heart and objective we certainly are not. So get yourself someone who not only talks the talks but walks the walk also. With proper management, a little can go a long way. Cheers, Tony. tonylmiles@yahoo.co.uk

20 Sam Parry says:
This advice is priceless, it has opened the door for me. It's great to see someone sharing this information with salt of the earth musicians, instead of leaving it for the multi-millionaire Simon Cowell sort, who are just out to exploit talent to expand their wealth. Cheers, Sam.

21 Ernie says:
That is great. But if you dont have a lot of money or little at all because you are living paycheck to paycheck, the funding part almost is impossible. You need a band that has connections already. erniemcolorado1@gmail.com

22 Paul says:
All very good advice; but it makes the assumption that you can create music at a certain level. I believe most people fail because of this fundamental misconception; that making music is easy. It is a craft, with all that that implies, with something extra on top. If you can do that, you are successful in the true sense and the rest is almost irrelevant. To me, this is putting the cart before the horse.

23 Louise says:
When you find out you are "creative", you also find out (and maybe some would disagree)-that you are not particularly business like. And find the whole thing a little daunting. I,like most people, just want to be heard but you are absalutely right! there are no half measures you either go through the proper channels and stop singing into mirrors or I guess you will end up to be your only audience. Great advice, oh and great hair!

24 Nick says:
Hi Mark, thanks for the video clip, well worth watching, and the Business sense comment is so true :)

25 nick fearn says:

31 Derek Jordan says:
Great blueprint on what artists should focus on! Its easy to get overwhelmed with what to concentrate on but when you break it down to 12 key areas, it makes it much more concise.

Thanks,

34 Chris Watkins - Slide Guitar says:
Hi Mark,

The beauty of this music business model is that you can apply it at any stage of your music career. There is no quick fix just common sense and hard work, but above all the desire to succeed.

Regards

Chris

35 dave says:
hi mark
i thought your point were too broard and not specific enough. Basically its commen sense. Ive been doing all these things for years, motoring away, networking and, constantly juggling all these things. I would have to say this does not get you success. You might be able to afford t shirts, cd, studio time, and cover your petrol, but its not enough for a living!!! I found taking a back seat on promoting and purley concerntrate on music and image will gain you success if you rightfully have what it takes. At the end of the day you dont want a small management set up, it never has enough clout. You need the promotion from the bigger labels.

thanks, dave

36 Maria says:
Really informative video, it put you the musical industry into perspective. Some tips are too schematic though. I guess a 9 minute´s video can´t cover that much. Anyway, the three things I´d like to have been explained further are:
1.How do you find funding? Besides the money you earn in gigs, I mean.
2.Is it a good idea to make a copyright of all your stuff before you put it in websites like myspace, youtube, etc?
3.Do you need to live in a huge city to be able to work in the music business, or traveling is enough?
Thank you very much for your generosity.
M.

So I got a new computer in the middle of October, it is a Toshiba Satellite A500/040, came with Windows vista Home premium. I got a Windows 7 upgrade disc that is only for my computer. I have upgraded my Laptop to windows 7 and am now having troubles... I think I picked up a few viruses and I am wanting to re-install windows to get my laptop back to normal. The only problem is I am not entirely sure if I can re-use the Upgrade disc. Does anyone know if I can? And if not, what I can do? Thanks in advance for any help and have a great New Year
